Core Concepts
Understand GEO, prompts, model samples, mentions, recommendations, citations, and visibility trends.
GEO
Generative engine optimization (GEO) improves how a brand is understood, mentioned, recommended, and cited in AI-generated answers. It complements SEO; it does not replace conventional search optimization.
Project
A project is the monitoring boundary for one brand. It contains the brand profile, target market, prompt language, competitors, prompts, schedule, runs, and report history.
Prompt
A prompt is a buyer-style question sent to a monitored model. Each prompt has an intent, wording, language, and history. Changing the wording changes the measurement and may require a new baseline.
Logical model
BrandGeo reports results under product-level model names such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. The administrator configures the underlying provider route and concrete API model. A route change can affect results and should be considered when interpreting a trend.
Run and response
A run is one monitoring batch for a project. It creates tasks for eligible prompt and model combinations. A response is the actual answer returned by one model for one prompt.
Failed or unsupported tasks are not automatically equivalent to negative brand results.
Mention and recommendation
A mention means the brand was identified in an answer. A recommendation is stronger: the answer presents the brand as a suitable choice for the user's need.
A mention can be neutral or incidental. Always inspect the answer context.
Position
Position records where the brand first appears, or its order in a list when the answer supports that interpretation. It is useful context, not a universal search rank.
Citation
A citation is a source URL exposed by the selected model or provider. Citation states can include available, unsupported, or temporarily missing. No citation data does not always mean that the model used no retrieval.
Visibility trend
A trend compares equivalent monitored samples across time. Reliable comparisons keep prompts, language, market, brand aliases, competitors, and model routes as stable as possible.
Measurement boundary
BrandGeo uses configured API-model responses. These samples may differ from personalized consumer web or app sessions. Reports are designed for repeatable diagnosis and comparison, not complete impression tracking.
